A 19th century masterpiece

Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens is a notable book, not only for being shorter compared to other classics, being a great entry point into classic literature, but also for not softening reality, it exposes the cruel treatment of many orphans mid-19th century.

It is touching, but never cheesy

Even though the book clearly presents the harshness of the world, the main character’s innocence shows a strong contrast, making it emotional, but not melodramatic. So,
It’s a book that makes the reader feel empathy or anger at the injustice presented, and sometimes feel hopeful when kindness is present.

You can easily imagine it as a movie in your head while reading

The characters are all well written and have clear recognizable personalities. The helpers feel warm, human and real, while the villains are unsettling. Thus, when combined in the same story they create an almost cinematic-like feel to the story.

Oliver Twist has many things to offer, not only for a reader who enjoys good books but also for those who aren’t used to classics.

To expand your vocabulary

As a book from the 19th century, it greatly exposes the reader to a vocabulary that isn’t dense, but feels academic.
In addition of its usage of descriptive language, it is present a vocabulary full of emotion, social and moral terms.
Due to its constant theme and situation, the context gets easier to understand the vocabulary the more you read it.

Great for unexperienced readers

Originally, Charles Dickens published Oliver Twist as a monthly serial installments; which basically means that it was released in smaller, sequential, affordable parts over several months. Because of that, it has 53 chapters (in modern editions), each of them being short, only around 8 pages long. This may make new readers stay engaged.
Even though Oliver Twist is set in the past, it feels considerably modern.
